Skin - Basic Statistics

Your skin is not merely the covering of your body, it is a very vital organ. In fact, it is the largest one and along with the heart the most important organ. Without either the skin or the heart life would be impossible.

Multiply all these components by and average of twenty-one square feet ranging in thickness from five to seventy layers and you have some idea of the skin being much more than a simple covering for the body.
Each skin layer is in a continuous process of movement. New skin cells are constantly created and forced upward to the surface by the birth of newer cells below. The surface cells are dead as they become hard they are cast off to make room for the fresher more active cells. This complete process occurs in a 28-day cycle.

Skin Functions

The skin is a thermostatic marvel that regulates and maintains the body temperature at about 98.6º, allowing us to adjust to our environment.
It performs pigmentation, the remarkable function of coloring the skin itself with a substance called melanin - which is what freckles, sun tan and brown spots are made of. Melanin determines skin tone and color.

The skin keeps bacteria, viruses and fungi out and keeps vital fluids in. It shields us from harmful gases and alkalies that could upset the chemical composition of the blood.
